Since you're reading this post in the Bakersfield Speedway ads, you may remember my Dad: Leon Stanfield, who raced at the Speedway from 1947 until he was too ill to safely drive. I still have have his last race car, a 1973 Pinto with 4 Delorto carbs. I may convert the car to a Mini Stock later on, but this isn't the car I need help with. Dad's last project was a 1967 Fiat Abarth 100-OT. Carlo Abarth was in Europe like Carroll Shelby is to America. Abarth built many cars, most of them one-off race cars, and a few cars that were used for experiment and testing new ideas. He built Ferraris, Maseratis, Porches, Mercedes Benzes, and most of all, the lowly Fiat cars. The Fiat cars he favored were the 500 and 600 models, which look a lot like a VW that shrank a lot. He also sold a lot of Abarth parts, so you could upgrade your underpowered little car. Many of the Fiat Abarth cars I've seen in the U.S. were just a stock car with Abarth parts installed on them. They aren't really 'clones' but neither are they true Abarth cars from his factory. The main clue is that the vehicle tag for an Abarth has that name on them. Of course, you can easily buy a new Fiat name plate and put whatever you want on it, but even with that, the lack of the large Abarth badges and trim give them away. Nice cars, but not exactly an Abarth. The car my Dad had was based on the Fiat 850 Coupe, which looks like a small Ferrari from the early 1960's. If you look up Abarth in Google, you'll find all kinds of information. The work remaining to be done is: 1. Finish body work and paint. 2. Refinish chrome and stainless trim. 3. Install new interior (the original interior is sun-rotted, but could still be used as a pattern.) 4. Buy 5 Cromodora wheels. These are the premium after-market alloy wheels that are still available (used) favored by nearly every Fiat of that period. The wheels on the car at this time are from a Fiat X1/9 and are known for breaking and rolling the car. I also have a set of generic Fiat wheels, and although they are steel and well made, they won't win any prizes for looks! We're talking somewhere in the neighborhood of $15,000 if I can get the body and paint work done at a discount. I have purchased all new Abarth badges, and I have a new set of Ferrari tail lights (it's amazing how many parts interchange between these cars!) as well as a proper Abarth steering wheel and shifter knob. The mechanical systems are nearly complete (the car runs and drives) but I still need to go through the electrical system (no headlights) and replace all three flexible brake lines. One brake hose has split, so it's time to replace them all. My future plans for the car is for it to go on the show circuit, and maybe race a little at Willow Springs with the Vintage Car Club that uses the track a couple of times a year. The big Italian Car Show held near the Pebble Beach Concours (and at the same time) is the premium show for all things Italian. As you can see from the above information, the car has a very high value based on it's rarity and extreme desirability. As far as I can find out, there is only one other 100-OT, of a different year, located in Texas. In it's current condition (about a #4) it has a value of ~$50,000.00. When the car is completed, the value would be very near $100,000.00. And NO, the car isn't for sale, and won't be as long as I have anything to say. Benefits of sponsor(s) will be discussed, but will certainly consist of having the sponsor(s) name being prominently displayed, as well as being notified of any shows or races the car is going to. If the sponsor shows me that they have sufficient skill to drive the car safely, theere is the possibility of taking a few laps at races. I'll post some photos so you can see the car, and you'll understand my wish to have the car restored.
